THE was only one real winner in the Thomas Carroll Glamorgan and Monmouthshire Cricket League fixtures on the weekend and that was the rain.

Most matches which were not cancelled from the get go were soon abandoned as the storm clouds gathered and poured scorn on the cricketing enthusiasts' parade.

However, one match did survive the elements and that was Abergavenny's encounter with Pontypridd at Avenue Road.

After winning the toss Ponty decided to have first knock, and the Hughes brothers, Gareth and John dominated their innings with respective scores of 66 not out and 61.

Andrew Collins came to the crease for an innings of 33 before Ponty many the canny decision to forfeit their last five overs.

Aber's best bowler was Dan Cooke with 3-61 as the innings closed on 238-5 off 45 overs.

The Avenue brigade were soon in trouble as Collins took 6-16 which included a hat-trick.
