LAST Saturday Monmouth was the destination for Abergavenny to play their penultimate EMBA game of the season. They were victorious on three of their four rinks to win the game comfortably by 112 shots to 65. Ieuan Jenkins rink did not find the green to their liking in the early part of their game but once they got used to the pace they began to take control. They scored 18 shots over the middle third of their game and retained their advantage throughout to win by 32 shots to 17. The rink of John Vale established an early superiority over their opposition, scoring 12 shots without reply on the first eight ends. This early dominance allowed the rink to cruise to victory by 26 shots to 13. Although they dropped three shots on the first end, Keith Richards' rink had established a lead by the fifth end. They then took total control of their game to go on and win by 33 shots to 12. Robert Poynter's rink held a substantial lead after eight ends but the Monmouth rink scored fourteen shots, conceding only three, over the last six ends to win the game by 23 shots to 21. The GBL team travelled to Tredegar to play a league game against Bedwelty Park. Unfortunately, they lost on all three rinks to lose the game by 68 shots to 54. Gareth Jones' rink held the lead for the majority of their game but conceded three shots on the final end to lose by 23 shots to 20. The game was close for the first ten ends on the rink of Bill Cooke. The Bedwelty Park rink then took control to win by 23 shots to 16. Derek Bailey's rink was in contention for the first few ends but then fell behind as their opponents took control. Although they staged a late recovery the Abergavenny rink lost by 22 shots to 18. This weekend Abergavenny play an MBA game away against Newport Athletic and a GBL game at Ebbw Vale Welfare. On Sunday there is a club "Two Wood Pairs" competition beginning at 2pm at Avenue Road.
