Abergavenny Ladies Firsts and Mens teams maintained their winning streak last weekend, while the Ladies Seconds scored an own goal and struggled with the hot weather, failing to bring home a win.
Ladies Firsts’ clash with Rhondda started with an equal first half, with lots of play in the midfield. Abergavenny then built the pressure by winning a few short corners and finally scoring, leaving them 1-0 up at half time. After the break it was the same back and forth play between the teams, then Rhondda who came away with a goal. Abergavenny reset as a team and focussed on pressing Rhondda back into their half. With supportive play from defenders the midfielders were able to bring the ball into the D, creating lots of chances for the forwards. After many saves from the Rhondda keeper, Abergavenny managed to seal another goal. All Abergavenny needed to do was to hold onto possession until the final whistle, leaving the final score 2-1.
Abergavenny Mens took on Lansdown B at home. The visitors were bottom of the league, and Abergavenny are coasting in the higher echelons, so with a strong team things should have been a formality. If only someone had told Lansdown.
The early parts of the game were surprisingly even. A strong stubborn Lansdown defence proved difficult to break down, and the home players just couldn’t find the final touch to break through. But the pressure built, and Lansdown were unable to significantly break the Aber midfield lines - and even when they did, a capable back three effectively mopped up. The home town break thorough eventually came from a short (penalty) corner, and a shot from Isaac Pritchard saw it over the line. Five minutes later, a break from midfield saw veteran Andrew Banks slot in for a well-deserved goal.
Leading 2-0 at half time, the 11-man Lansdown team started to tire, allowing space and time for the fresher Aber midfield. Luc Greaves and Rhys Holland showed some lovely ball control and pressure on the Lansdown goal resulted in a further goal from Isaac Pritchard, though clipping the post in addition was probably not what he intended.
Further interchange between Greaves and Holland saw the later miss-control a ball in the centre of the D, and an opportunity spurned, but overall, pace, skill and fitness were enough to see off a stubborn and resilient Lansdown team. Final score 3-0 to Abergavenny. Three games, three clean sheets, and six scored – impressive stats for the town club, who train on a Thursday and always welcome new players.
