ABERGAVENNY netball club's 'A' team played a closely fought game against Trecelyn missing out on a win by only four goals.
With GD Kath Bowen unavailable Amanda Leaker stepped up to play a strong GD position and played exceptionally well.
Good defence from Ceris Van de Vyver and Debbie Gwilliam moving back from attack to defence with her height and reach made it increasingly difficult for Trecelyn to shoot near to the post.
With good defensive and speedy attacking play from both Ffion Edwards and Siobhan MacQuillan up court allowing Andrea Prosser quick feeding into the shooting circle and accurate shooting by Kelly Morris and Amy Woollin.
Amy Woollin deservingly getting both player of the match and captain's player too.
Abergavenny 'A' - 30
Newport 'A' - 45
ABERGAVENNY 'A' battled bravely against a strong Newport squad, but were ultimately bettered by 45 goals to 30.
Accurate shooting from GA Amy Woollin and GS Kelly Morris in the first quarter ensured that the score remained closely matched at the first break.
Abergavenny kept up the pressure in the second quarter, with some excellent fast and accurate passing down the court from WD Ffion Edwards, C Siobhan MacQuillan and WA Andrea Prosser.
At half time, Newport changed their tactics in defence, and brought on three new players. After some good interceptions in defence and solid shooting from the opposition, Newport went well in front.
For the final quarter, Siobhan MacQuillan moved to WD and helped to strengthen the defence of GD Kath Bowen and GK Debbie Gwilliam, stepping in for the unavailable GK Ceris van de Vyver. Abergavenny managed to gather some momentum again in the final quarter but the difference in score was too great.
Player of the match was Siobhan MacQuillan and Captain's Player was Amy Woollin.
Abergavenny 'B' - 23
Silurians 'B' - 26
ABERGAVENNY 'B' team played a nail biting game against Silurians 'B' on Saturday.
Aber got off to a good start with some fast balls from the Centre Vicky Price and excellent attacking by newly promoted player WA Sam Blandford.
Aber played the ball around and used the defence of GD Kath Butt and WD Joanna Box to pass back if needed. Some accurate shooting by GS Hannah Morgan and good timing by GA Becky Pritchard led to a half time score of 8-11 to Silurians.
Aber got off to a flying start in the second half and scored more goals than their opposition due to some excellent defending by GK Claire Powell, to narrowly trail 17-18 going into the final quarter.
Unfortunately, Aber failed to retain this form and the final score read 26-23 to Silurians.
Player of the match was GD Kath Butt.
