Clydach Wasps - 3

Blaenavon Blues - 2

IN the wake of a week of heavy rain and Saturday's constant downpour, which saw football fixtures cancelled across the board, Blaenavon Blues match against Clydach Wasps should have been cancelled but it wasn't.

At 2pm both sides were on the pitch and chomping at the bit to go head to head in a local derby.

The opening half was an even affair as Blaenavon played some neat pass and move football on a pitch that was holding puddles of water everywhere.

The Blues drew first blood when some nice football put Matt Burns in behind the Wasps defence and the 16-year-old battled a tight angle to coolly beat the home keeper.

Clydach bounced back at the Blues and forced their keeper' Jones into two outstanding saves, but the Wasps soon drew level when a headed cross was met by a superb save from Jones only for the follow up to be fired home.

Clydach went in at half time a goal to the good after a Cox back pass was miss-judged by Jones in the Blues goal.

The Blues battled hard in the mud during the second half and got themselves on level terms when skipper Mikey Waite fired home a free kick.

Yet Clydach were not to be denied and when a ball wasn't cleared from the visitor's defence, the home side capitalised and beat Jones in the Blues goal.

Regardless of the outcome both sides should be given credit for trying to play football on a pitch that should never have been given the all clear to start.

This week the Blues take a break before entertaining Fleur De Lys Welfare on Saturday, December 8. Kick off is 2pm at the Memorial Ground.
