CRICKHOWELL High School student Math Edwards has become the first ever black belt at Gilwern Karate Club and and is now registered in Japan as a Shodan grade.
Math has been training for 11 years but moved to the karate club in Gilwern two years ago under the instruction of Matt Stockham Sensei 5th Dan JKS, to hopefully progress further in the martial art.
Further it he did. Earlier in the year Math along with his twin brother Brett and father Johny were selected as part of the Welsh Squad for 2016.
But the icing on the cake came when Matt Sensei told Math that he would be attempting his Black Belt grading.
Since that conversation Math did everything he could to train up to five sessions per week at various clubs and also at Matt Sensei’s home Dojo in Brecon.
The hard work certainly paid off when Math travelled to Nottingham on Halloween to undertake his grading exam for his karate black belt and passed with flying colours.
Family, friends, club mates and Senseis would all like to congratulate Math on his excellent result.
Gilwern Karate club trains at the village hall in Gilwern every Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm, and have also opened the doors to a beginners only class from 5pm for those who would like a taster.
If your interested please get in touch for more details by reaching Matt Sensei on Facebook, email [email protected], or text 07813553868.
