FLEUR Atkins, a 17-year-old hockey player from Abergavenny, is one of 1,600 youngsters competing at this year's Sainsbury's 2014 School Games (4-7 September), a major multi-sport event for elite young athletes. Fleur will represent Wales in the hockey, just one of 12 sports being contested at the four day event in Manchester which is supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust. While at the event, Fleur will get a taste of the pressure and excitement of competing at the highest level. She will experience an athlete's village, take part in opening and closing ceremonies, and perform in front of a crowd of thousands. A delighted Fleur, who represented the Wales Under-21 squad against Belgium in Holland earlier this year, said, "I'm really pleased to be selected for Sainsbury's School Games as it's an event that I have wanted to take part in as I feel that it will develop my skills and ability in hockey and it's always good to play against strong teams. My main aims for the Sainsbury's School Games are to give a 100% when representing my country on the pitch and to enjoy and appreciate the experience." A number of British stars have all been on the same journey as Fleur and experienced competing at the Sainsbury's School Games before going on to sporting success at a senior level. Ahead of the Sainsbury's 2014 School Games, people in Abergavenny are being urged to get behind Fleur Atkins via the Sainsbury's "Show your Support" campaign. People can pledge their messages of support to Fleur, either online by using #2014SSG or on the campaign website: http://www.2014schoolgames.com/support">www.2014schoolgames.com/support. The messages will be broadcast on a giant screen on the 'Show your Support' bus when it visits the Games between 4 – 7 September.
