ABERGAVENNY Cricket Club will host a unique Twenty-20 cricket match between the current Glamorgan squad and a Glamorgan Legends XI this Sunday afternoon (30 June), in celebration of the dedicated service given by current Glamorgan captain Mark Wallace to the county and to Welsh cricket in general.
Abergavenny is of course where Wallace played and developed his cricketing talents as a junior and youth player and Avenue Road has a special place in the cricketer's heart.
"Glamorgan players past and present coming together in my home club of Abergavenny for one final match means a huge deal to me. It's amazing to see the support already, and I'm excited to see what the game holds," explained Wallace, who added, "It's an incredible feeling to have the game held at Abergavenny. I grew up with the club. It's where my father played, so it has some brilliant memories. It's been a massive part of my upbringing, and was the first place I played as a junior. It's the epitome of home for me."
Wallace explained, "To see other players progress through the ranks there has been a pleasure. Michael Powell and Geraint Jones (who both now play for Kent) started at Abergavenny CC and they're both absolute legends. The club clearly has the magic touch."
The Legends XI will contain a number of former England International Cricketers, including Matthew Maynard, Hugh Morris, Steve James, Robert Croft, Simon Jones, Steve Watkin and Alex Wharf, as well as Michael Powell.
Guesting for the current Glamorgan side will be young Abergavenny player, Matthew Knight, who had been generously sponsored for the occasion by Nick and Dawn Kinman,
NK Consulting (Wales) Ltd.
Knight is a highly promising off-spin bowler, who also bats and fields well.
The occasion provides a great opportunity for the public to enjoy top-level skills, rub shoulders with recent Glamorgan stars and at the same time pay tribute to Wallace and support his three charities – Ty Hafan, the Tom Maynard Trust and the Professional Cricketers' Benevolent Fund.
In addition to the cricket, there will be other attractions, including a bouncy castle, refreshments, a licensed bar open throughout the day and a number of stalls.
Gates open midday and the match starts at 2pm. Admission is by programme in return for a £5 donation. Children under 16 go free if accompanied by an adult.
