MANCHESTER United legend Eric Cantona hit the headlines this week for insulting the husband of an Abergavenny women on Twitter.
Ok the bloke in question happens to be presidential candidate Francois Fillon, but his wife Penelope is from these parts, and both were on the fiery Frenchman’s radar when he launched into a Twitter tirade about politics and football.
The former Red Devil made a direct reference to the Fillons when he snarled on social media, “’Ooh aah... France it’s a very strange country. If you are indicted you are banned indefinitely from the national football team, but you can still run for the presidency.”
The surly striker was referring to the case of Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema who has been banned from playing for France whilst under investigation over an alleged plot to blackmail a teammate.
Fillon on the other hand was placed under investigation over an alleged fake jobs scandal regarding his wife earlier this month, but has continued his bid to run for the presidency in April.
Not one to let sleeping dogs lie, or brass necked hypocrisy to go unchecked, the Old Trafford icon added, “Francois Fillon once suggested cancelling a match if people were disrespecting the national anthem. I suggest we cancel the election when candidates are disrespecting morals and ethics.”
Bearing in mind that angry Eric was responsible for the most famous common assault case in the history of the English legal system when in 1995 he launched a flying kung-fu kick at a Crystal Palace fan who insulted his mother, Fillon should be wary about angering the maverick from Marseille any further.
Lest we forget, "When the seagulls follow the trawler, it’s because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.”
