ABERGAVENNY will be awash with bunting, stalls and bikes next month when two legendary annual institutions join forces as one.
The Abergavenny Festival of Cycling will be staging its Iron Mountain Sportif, and holding a special sports day at Bailey Park.
And, at the same time, the Park will be buzzing with town’s people enjoying the revived Abergavenny Carnival, which will bounce back after a five-year lay-off on Saturday June 29.
Festival of Cycling organiser Bill Owen MBE said, “We have had a fantastic alliance with the Abergavenny Carnival in past years. The days we enjoyed together were tremendous and it is grand to see the Carnival revived again.”
It is five years since the Carnival last took place but, this year, there will be no floats going through town but a walking parade to a Bailey Park full of stalls and entertainment.
Mr Owen added, “We had sports governing bodies like the Welsh Rugby Union, Welsh Cycling and Tennis Wales exhibiting and providing activities for kids to enjoy last year and it was a tremendous success.
“So we have decided to do it again and, with the addition of the Carnival, we expect Bailey Park to have a thumping good atmosphere when the riders for our 20, 40, 70 and 100 mile Sportif rides return to town.”
And the organisers of the Carnival are excited to see it back on the town’s calendar.
Secretary Sarah Hickey said, “We booked a date and were lucky to get it but Bill had that date so we thought it would be great if we combined forces.
“We hope the carnival will grow again in the future, but our first thoughts are for this year and we don’t know how it will take off. I hope everyone will support us and enjoy the day.”
