Abergavenny Girls Netball club recently had a storming weekend at the South East Wales league. For some of these girls it was their first foray into competitive netball and they played with commitment, style and passion.

The ‘B’ team were on first and started off with a decisive win over Gilfach ‘B’ 9-2.

The defence of Ellie, Eve and Lowri stopped the Gilfach attach from penetrating the circle.

With some excellent play from Jossie as GA, the team got a decisive first victory under their belt. The day though got progressively harder. Despite playing their hardest they lost the next two matches.

Against an experienced Ystrad ‘B’ side they lost 9-2 but showed moments of brilliance.

Their last match against Ystrad ‘C’ was 1-1 all at half-time, but then Ystrad got ahead and eventually won by 4-2.

Special recognition must go to Seren Howells as player of the team. As C for the team she covered the court brilliantly and gave 100% in both defence and attack and controlled the game really well for the whole team.

The ‘A’ team had a storming time walking away with a clean sheet of three wins.

They beat Ystrad ‘C’ 8-0, Gilfach ‘B’ 14-0 and Gilfach ‘A’ 9-4.

The defence combinations of Jessie, Amelia, Alisha and Lucy were unbreakable and held all attacking players back. .

The C/WA combinations of Bethan, Mollie, Jess and Katie meant the ball flowed well down the court and into the circle with ease.

The team only had two shooters that day, Jess and Lucy, and both held their nerve under some fierce defence to see the teams onto three amazing victories.

Players of the day went to Jessie Barrell and Amelia Jones.
