THE Abergavenny Squash ‘B’ team played its first ever match in the Premier Leagues, and beat Llanelli ‘B’ by five matches to nil! Ed Leakey came from 2-1 down to win 3-2, and Anthony Squire did even better, winning the last three sets of his match. This fine start means the team catapults into second place.

The ‘D’ team entertained Risca ‘B’, and managed to squeeze a 3-2 victory. The match hinged on the first string match, which Mitchell Lawrence managed to win in five sets, demonstrating a growing maturity in his temperament and match play, which was great to witness. He was ably supported by Chris Owen and Jason Hall, who both won comfortably. The team settle into fourth place.

The ‘C’ team went to Risca, and lost a close match by 3-2. Along with Mike Logan, Mitchell Lawrence won again, but unfortunately the other three matches drifted away, and the team finds itself in sixth place.

The ‘A’ team entertained the premier Llanelli side, and had an excellent 4-1 victory. The highlight of the night was the performance of Jethro Binns, who dragged himself back from the brink of defeat to win in five sets. There were comfortable wins for Roshan Bharos and Lewys Hurst, and the match was completed by captain Chris Hill, who also won in five sets. The team start their campaign in third place.

The week was completed on Friday with the ‘E’ team going to Abertillery, where it lost a close match by three matches to two. Jiwan Gahunia had a great victory against an opponent that he had never beaten before, and, as ever, Stuart Lewis ran his opponent into the ground, losing the first two sets and winning the next three! The team ended the night in sixth place.
