A whirlwind descended on Abergavenny’s Labour club last Saturday evening in the shape of the people’s potter himself, Mr Jimmy White.

From Higgins to Hendry, from Cocaine to the Crucible, White has enjoyed one of the most colorful careers in sport, and the green baize maestro could be caught cueing up and taking to the table, albeit a pool table, with some of Abergavenny’s finest on the weekend.

Jimmy and his new lady friend Jade Slusarczyk, arrived at the venue in style, courtesy of Julian’s Taxis who also sponsored the event.

Former Sky Sports Walk-On Girl and TV presenter Jade added a touch of glamour to proceedings as Jimmy racked em’ up and hit ‘em hard, frame after frame after frame.

Abergavenny Labour club’s Steve Skinner told the Chronicle, “I’m not sure Jimmy knew what to expect when he first arrived, but he soon released what a friendly bunch we are and settled down to chat have a few drinks and play some pool.”

Waling on to Start Me Up by The Rolling Stones, crowd-pleaser Jimmy knuckled down and played two sessions of eight frames and one session consisting of nine frames, as the Whirlwind went head to head and toe to toe against some of the best Abergavenny has to offer. And on the night some of our homegrown pool hustlers even got the better of the snooker legend.

For three frames Jimmy also doubled up with Abbey White, Peter Williams, and Corey Williams to add a bit of variety to proceedings.

Here’s who played the whirlwind - Ashley White, Stuart Taylor, Paula Nash, Gareth Reed, Chris Didcote, Damon Osbourne, Jamie Marshall, Phil Norris, Josh Collet, Andy Blackmore, Edgar Edmunds, Bryn Rowland, Glyn Morgan, Paul Thomas, Meilog Jones, Malcolm Edmunds, Becky Gilchrist, David Sharp, Sean Davies, Nathan Davies, Terry Hulbert, Mike Anderson, Steve Jackson, Andrew Hulbert, Tom Millard, Mark Skinner, and Carl Jones.

The event was professionally compered by Bob Thomas and referred by Jessica Hayes Sparks. Paul Zavishlock and Bryn Rowland were responsible for the table set up and one lucky raffle winner won a gallon of beer tokens for the bar.

Steve Skinner added, “Both Jimmy and Jade were great. They were extremely friendly and had no airs or graces. Jimmy made a particular fuss of a 90-year-old lady called Pearl, and was happy to take the time to chat to her and give her a signed copy of his autobiography. It was a brilliant night enjoyed by all. It’s going to be an almost impossible act to follow, but I guess we’ll have to try.”
