AS we enter the halfway stage of the season, Abergavenny senior badminton club men's 'A' team are sitting pretty on top of the the premier division with near rivals Ponthir snapping at their heels.
Gwyn Pritchard, Huw Pritchard, Steve Miles and Ben Gorell winning the vital rubbers in the 5-4 victory over Ponthir at home.
The seniors were out in force in the recent West Glamorgan Tournament with Alice Palmer taking the doubles crown with long time partner Hannah Killick. She then teamed up with Sam Gorell to take the mixed title defeating fellow Abergavenny pair Huw Pritchard and Hannah Killick in a tight three set match.
The men's doubles semi saw Sam and Ben Gorell beat Huw and Gwyn Pritchard for a place in the final. Unfortunately Sam was injured early on in the final and so ended his day.
The Welshpool Mid-Wales Plus junior tournament saw a very strong field with the best of Wales being supplemented with a sprinkle of good English players.
Tom Whiteman took all three titles at U13 level winning the doubles with James Morris and the mixed with sister Kate. He also won the doubles at U15 and was runner up in the mixed. Sister Katie was runner up in the U13 girls singles, won the mixed with her brother, won the U15 doubles and was runner up in the U17 doubles.
James Ellaway took the U15 mixed crown, whilst Megan Pritchard won the U13 doubles completing a highly successful weekend for the club.
A host of Abergavenny badminton club players will represent Gwent in the Inter-county championship in early January. Tom Whiteman, James Ellaway, Callum Simmonds, Evan Williams and Geraint Davies make up the boys (all Abergavenny juniors) whilst Morgan Williams, Katie Whiteman and Megan Pritchard (Abergavenny) are joined by Kelly Saunders and Emily Menger-Davies to make up the girls team.
The senior club play on a Friday night at the leisure centre from 7.30 and the juniors have coaching on a Monday or Tuesday.
