Lliswerry FC - 2
Govilon FC - 2
IN the wake of two pitch inspections, Govilon's game against Lliswerry went ahead and ended in a two all draw.
Govilon welcomed back Jamie Laurent from the Thursdays and the returning player played a major part in Govilon getting there first point on the Spytty Road pitch since the club's return to Gwent County football five years ago.
Govilon couldn't play there usual fluent game because of the waterlogged pitch but battled from the first whistle to contain a lively Lliswerry team who played the conditions just right by favouring the long ball game.
Lliswerry's tactics kept Govilon on the back foot for much of the first half and their reward finally came when a misunderstanding in the Govion defence led to a one and one situation between the Lliswerry striker and the Govilon keeper. The striker won that particular duel and Lliswerry went into the interval with a one goal cushion
Come the second-half and Govilon introduced prolific striker Dean Morgan.
Morgan's running off the ball caused panic in the home side's ranks and enabled Jamie Laurent to put in a first time ball for Craig Norman, who burst from midfield into the box and gave Govilon the equaliser they deserved.
With only ten minutes left on the clock, Lliswery were awarded a free kick just outside the box, and they made no mistake in driving it home for their striker to flick it into the net and return the lead to the home team.
A tenacious Govilon weren't about to be denied, and dug in deep looking for the equaliser.
The breakthrough finally came when Dean Morgan fired into the net in the nick of time to give Govilon a well-earned point and move them up to fourth place in Gwent County Division One.
Next Saturday Govilon will look to go one better when they invite Pilcs to party on their pitch with a 2pm kick-off.
Elsewhere in Division One, the Blaenavon Blues couldn't keep AC Pontymister from scoring and just missed out on the points to the tune of 2-1.
Meanwhile, spare a thought for poor old Mardy, who after suffering a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Cefn forest are once again sitting firmly in the drop zone with only eight points and two wins to their name.
Tranch are all that is currently standing between Mardy and rock bottom.
In Welsh League Division Three, Goytre kept their promotion possibilities open ended with a 3-2 win over a visiting Briton Ferry outfit. The trio of strikes came from Corey Jenkins, Graham Mason and Kristian Wharton. Yet every silver lining has its cloud and the Plough Road outfit suffered a heavy blow when midfielder Matthew Prosser was sent off.
