Govilon - 1

Lliswerry - 2

GOVILON recorded a fine home victory in their mid-week league encounter with table topping Lliswerry, thanks to a late strike by Neville Harris.

Although this dented their title challenge, Lliswerry are still odds-on to lift the title when the league ends on May 16, with Govilon looking at the runners-up spot.

And it was Lliswerry who were the opponents again last Saturday, but this time in the semi-final of the County Motors Cup. Played at neutral Race FC, Govilon kicked off in near gale conditions which made life difficult for both teams.

Lliswerry made the breakthrough after 25 minutes when a long free kick was floated into the Govilon box which goalkeeper Parsons could only palm away, leaving Lliswerry to knock in the rebound.

Lliswerry almost doubled their lead when the ever dangerous Merrett headed just over from a corner, and it was Merrett who increased his team's lead when his speculative shot rolled into the Govilon goal as half time approached.

After the re-start, Dean Morgan had a shot blocked, and Govilon won a series of corners mid-way through the half. They came close to reducing the arrears when Morgan's shot troubled Lliswerry 'keeper Ross Davies who was happy to push it away for a corner.

With two minutes left Govilon attacked along the right wing with Matthew Ham freeing Craig Norman who crossed for Jake Heckles to beat Davies from close range, but that was as good as it got for Govilon, as Lliswerry gained revenge for Govilon's double of league wins over them.

On Saturday, Govilon entertain current second placed team, Pill FC (3.00pm), knowing a win is vital if they are to dislodge them from their placing at the season's end, and to make their games in hand count. The following Tuesday (7 May) they entertain, bottom club Pentwynmawr Athletic (6.30pm).
