Govilon - 1
Pilcs - 2
IN the wake of last week's gritty display against Newport based Liswerry, Govilon returned home to the Recreation ground but were unable to find the necessary form to keep Pilcs from beating them 1-2.
In a very entertaining game, the first-half was very open with both sides playing attacking football and looking as if they could score at will.
Yet the score-sheet remained blank until within a few minutes of the interval when the visitors were awarded a penalty which they duly tucked away.
Straight from the restart Govilon attacked with Ben Bannon finding himself goal side of the defender only to see his shot fly over the bar. Soon after the whistle sounded and Govilon went into the interval a goal down and chasing the game.
Govilon brought on super sub Dean Morgan at the start of the second-half, but within minutes Pilcs had doubled their lead and the home side knew they faced an uphill struggle if they were to salvage anything from the afternoon.
Govilon went on the offensive continually but found themselves still vulnerable to the counter from a lively Pilcs attack.
With 15 minutes remaining, the home side finally made the breakthrough when the ball dropped in the box and a combined shot from Jamie Wilkins and Rhys Whiteman, who struck the ball together, hit the back of the net.
Looking to keep the momentum going and win the game, Govilon applied the pressure, but
Matthew Heritage hit the post and further chances were either squandered or saved by the visitors' keeper who was having a very good afternoon.
As the match entered added time, Govilon were thrown a golden opportunity to square the game when Dean Morgan was tripped in the box and a penalty was awarded.
Morgan duly stepped up to level the match only to see the Pilcs keeper make yet another save and prove that it was just not to be the home side's day.
Next week Govilon are on the road again as they face the might of Abertillery Excelsior and strive to improve their standing in Gwent County Division One.
Elsewhere, in Gwent County Division Two, the Mardy were once again denied by a single goal as Cwmffrwdoer Sports beat them 2-1.
Meanwhile, in Gwent County Division Three, the Abergavenny Thursdays were rampant as they thrashed Underwood Athletic Social 2-0.
In Welsh League Division Three, Goytre continue to chase for promotion after player/manager Carl Evans bagged all the goals in their 2-1 win at relegation-threatened Treowen Stars.
