Govilon - 4

Cromwell - 1

GOVILON are through to the last 16 of Gwent football's equivalent of the league cup after a home victory against their division two opponents.

The Badgers opened the scoring after 15 minutes when Dean Morgan's lofted cross was met by Craig Norman who headed past the bespectacled Chris Edwards in Cromwell's goal.

Anthony Moriarty in Govilon's goal had to be at his smartest to deny Cromwell an equaliser on the half hour.

Shortly after Chris Penny released Dean Morgan who increased Govilon's lead as he slotted the ball past Edwards.

Govilon continued to press after the restart with Jamie Laurent going close. Cromwell cleared off the line from a Dean Morgan drive, and in the next minute were given hope when Marcus Corner beat Moriarty.

With their spirits raised Cromwell came more into the game but after 70 minutes Dean Morgan struck again when he cut inside in the penalty area and curled the ball past Edwards.

Govilon were assured of victory five minutes from time when a slight hesitation by a Cromwell defender allowed Ben Bannon to pounce and set up Morgan, who completed his hat-trick.

On Saturday, Govilon return to league action when they travel to rock bottom Albion Rovers(3.00pm), while Govilon's Gwent Central League side entertain near neighbours Clydach Wasps at Pen-y-Pound in round one of the Mia Cars Cup (2.00pm).

Presoced - 3

Gilwern and District - 3

GILWERN traveled to Prescoed on Saturday in a match billed as the clash of the titans - as both Gwent Central League teams remained unbeaten prior to the match.

Gilwern started the game with great purpose and should have taken the lead within the first five minutes but Adam Carrington failed to convert an opportunity.

Gilwern continued to press strongly but, against the run of play, found themselves going a goal down after 15 minutes due to a sloppy header from a corner.

Responding with some great football, the back four of Captain Webby, Matthew Chaney, Joey and Blair Keane were resolute in their purpose and defended bravely.

Some hard tackling in midfield by Luke Mears and Bergoyne created both space and opportunities, and Gilwern claimed their reward in the 30th minute with a fine header from Ben Bergoyne.

After picking up a nasty knock, Mears was replaced at half time with Matthew Williams.

The second half started even stevens with Gilwern pressing strongly and following a succession of corners taken by Spud Randall, man of the match Adam Carrington popped up with a nice header to give Gilwern the lead.

Great work by Richard Langley and Mazza in midfield saw strikers Thomas Baynton and Adam Carrington break through on several occasions and cause the Prescoed defence no end of problems. After an hour of play, Carrington scored an absolute screamer from 20 yards. Kurt Jones in goal made three magnificent saves to keep the score at 3-1, however, a lapse of concentration in defence with 15 minutes to go saw Prescoed score two goals in as many minutes. Youngster Aled Pridey came on to replace Richard Langley late in the second half and put in a confident performance as Gilwern saw out the game honours even.

Manager Tony Carrington said, "This was our toughest game to date and I am delighted and proud at the magnificent display our players put in."
