Pentwynmawr Athletic - 2

PENTWYNMAWR made a mockery of their bottom spot in Gwent County Division One and proved good value in taking their first point of the season in a match in which gave Govilon plenty to think about.

The home team could have taken the lead twenty minutes in, when 'keeper Parsons was sharply off his line to save an angled shot from close range, and Athletic also went close from the resultant corner.

Despite this pressure it was Govilon who took the lead eight minutes before the break, when the ball rebounded to Neville Harris who drilled home from fully 25 yards.

Harris nearly doubled his and Govilon's tally when latching on to a loose ball in the box, only to see his shot on the turn go just over the bar.

As the break approached Pentwynmawr pressed hard for an equaliser, and it took the sharp intervention of Andy Spiers to deny them to keep the score at 0-1 going into the interval.

The second half sprung into life on the hour when Pentwynmawr bagged their equaliser with a speculative shot which beat the Govilon keeper.

Five minutes later they were ahead when Govilon's defence failed to deal with a long range free kick, and Pentwynmawrs' Suter bundled the ball into the net.

Govilon drew level when Ben Bannon headed in from a Rhys Whiteman right flank cross, despite long and loud protests that the ball had gone over the bye-line before being crossed.

Frustrated all afternoon by their opponents Govilon had to settle for one point instead of the expected three, and slip one place in the league to third as a result.

Govilon have a blank Saturday coming up next and then have a tough away trip to last season's league runners-up Fleur-de-lys Welfare the following weekend. Govilon's Gwent Central side are away to Panteg on Saturday.
