ABERGAVENNY returned to league action with a trip to Abertillery Park and returned from what has not been a happy hunting ground for Genny in many a moon with the lion's share of points

Aber's side had a settled look about it with Williams Morgan and Staphnil making up the front row, Dan Morris and Dan Horler in the engine room, and Mark Squirrel, Josh Davies and Josh Hitchman forming the back row.

Rhob Connick and Rhodri Webster were at half back, Gareth Beavan and Dan Smith in the centre and the back three comprised of Dan Dumore, Lloyd Holder and Wil Willams.

Abertillery started quite sharply, applying the pressure, and forcing the away side to concede a soft penalty

A good driving line-out from the Abertillery eight resulted in some go forward impetus to the home backs but good tackling by the Abergavenny centres resulted in a ball spill which ever present flanker Josh Davies kicked through to win the race for the touchdown, converted by Rhodri Webster, 7-3.

This try proved rather costly for Abergavenny as in the act of scoring Flanker Josh Davies sustained a serious shoulder injury which will prevent him from playing for the rest of the season. Josh was replaced by Luke Williams and soon after strong tackling centre Dan Smith also suffered a serious injury to his ribs. Dan was replaced by Mat Sevenoaks, a former youth team player who was making his first appearance after being out for two years with a serious knee injury.

After the interval Abertillery played with more urgency and composure and only heroic defence by the whole of Abergavenny, especially one crunching tackle from Lloyd Holder prevented Abertillery from scoring.

A loose kick out of defence by Abertillery was gathered by Wil Williams who cut the defence, aided by good hands from Owen Staphnil, for second row Dan Horler to cross the line for a converted try.

The home side now threw everything into attack and the defence was eventually breached for their winger to score out wide, 14-10.

Abergavenny replaced scrum half Rhob Connick with Lewys Evans and Gareth Williams with Ieuan James. As the game was drawing to a close Abergavenny managed to get a foot hold in the Abertillery 22 and put several good phases of play together and eventually were rewarded with a five metre scrum. Abergavenny scrum has been very dominant all season and this proved to be the case one again when after two collapsed scrums the referee awarded a penalty try to leave the final score 21-10 to Abergavenny.

This was another fine team performance by Abergavenny although marred by two very serious injuries. It will give them confidence for next weeks' game against top of the table Nantyglo.

Tonight at Bailey Park (Thursday) Abergavenny Quins take on Usk seconds in the Ivor Jones cup, kick off is 7.15pm. All support is welcome.
