WHEN it feels like you’ve got the weight of the world on your shoulders, don’t give in, use a little power and start lifting. It certainly worked for Govilon lady Gemma Stimpson, who said getting into powerlifting is one of the best things she’s ever done.
The plucky powerlifter may be a relative newcomer to the growing sport, but since she began lifting in July last year, she’s already been picked to represent Wales in the powerlifting world championships held in Ireland this November.
The 27-year-old powerlifter who works at Abergavenny’s Keepersfit fitness centre, told the Chronicle, “I’ve always been physically active. For the last three years I’ve been doing CrossFit, and from there it seemed a natural progression to powerlifting.”
Although traditionally regarded by many as a male dominated sport, more and more ladies are entering the realm of powerlifting and showing all the doubters and naysayers just what they’re made of.
Gemma explained, “I love powerlifting because it is a very rewarding sport and is fantastic for your self-belief and confidence. It’s a brilliant motivational tool and makes you stronger both physically and mentally.
“I’ve met a lot of wonderful people through the sport and in my experience the powerlifting community fosters a very supportive and encouraging environment.”
Gemma who has previously rode for the GB cycling team as a 16-year-old, added, “I’d like to stress how important it is in powerlifting to have a good coach who always pushes you to dig deep and find an inner strength you didn’t know you possessed.
“I’m lucky to have one of the best and his name is Allan Jones. So I’d just like to say thanks Alan.”
And for all you aspiring powerlifters out there, Gemma has some simple words of advice, “Don’t be scared and just go for it!”
