BADMINTON ace Aimie Whiteman delivered the goods and came away with an impressive trophy haul after competing in the U15 Irish Open.
Held in Baldoyle Badminton Centre in Dublin, the 13-year-old began her campaign in the Girls’ Singles where she played a thrilling three setter against Irish seed Kim Feehily.
Unfortunately she came up short 22-24 in the third set (22-24, 23-21, 22-24).
The loss didn’t deter Whiteman, who took to the court in the Mixed Doubles with English partner, Alex Green.
The duo had a string of convincing wins throughout the weekend, not dropping a single set until the semi-finals where they came across third placed seeds Peter McDonald and Kerry Fallon.
The Anglo-Welsh pairing battled through to beat them 21-17, 16-21, 21-13.
In the finals, Whiteman and Green proved unbeatable against the Irish pairing of Daniel O’Meara and Orla Flynn, comfortably winning the Gold medal in two sets, 21-14 and 21-15.
Whiteman also achieved success in the Girls’ Doubles, where she paired up with England’s Caitlin Harper.
The girls appeared to play well together, winning their first few games with relative ease.
They were unfortunate to just miss out on a spot in the final, losing in the third set of the semi-final 21-19 to Aimee Hong and Therese Nguyen of Norway.
All in all a hugely successful weekend for Whiteman. Congratulations!
