Abergavenny Town FC - 1

Swansea University FC - 3

DESPITE their slip against the students of Swansea University, Town still remain top of Welsh Football League, Division Two, but it’s getting mighty close.

Town have been joined by two other Monmouthshire clubs, Caldicot Town and Monmouth Town, as the leading lights of the division, but all three are separated by just a single point, with Town holding the advantage and having a game in hand over their county rivals.

Against Swansea Town had plenty of possession and forced umpteen corners but ultimately paid the price for a lack of clinical finishing. After early Town pressure it was the visitors who took the lead on the half-hour when Ian Wilson volleyed home from close range, and they held on to their lead until half time.

Early in the second half, Town had two good chances, but spurned both, firing over the bar. It was on the hour that Town drew level after an almighty goalmouth scramble saw Nathan Davies prod the ball home and despite it being swiftly booted out of the goalmouth, referee Darren Adie ruled that the ball had crossed the goal-line.

Fifteen minutes from time, Town nearly took the lead for the first time, but Harry Churchill in the student’s goal brought off a smart save. Late in the game the visitors scored two late goals, to place themselves, with the games they have in hand, as title challengers.

On Saturday, Town travel to another promotion contender, STM Sports, who represent the community of St. Mellons. It’s a gruelling climax to the season for Town who face eight of their remaining nine fixtures away from home.

Town’s reserve side, frustrated by postponements, and lack of a fixture as they were last Saturday, travel to Undy, in what will hopefully be, weather permitting, new player/manager Ross Melrose’s debut. Both matches kick off at 2pm.
