Bridgend Street FC - 3
ABERGAVENNY Town’s winning streak came to an end on Saturday at Bridgend Street’s Willows ground in the shadow of Tremorfa steelworks.
Town’s Dafydd Brewer headed in from a corner after ten minutes but Street pulled themselves level on 25 minutes when a free kick on the left found former Carmarthen Town player Jeff White, who turned and fired in a shot which clipped the far post to leave Town ‘keeper Indge beaten.
Five minutes later Jamie Laurent beat Street’s ‘keeper to a ball wide on the right wing, and with the goalkeeper stranded, Laurent lobbed the ball from where he was standing, into the net, beating the one defender who had raced in to cover.
Town held the advantage at half time but were dealt a blow when Craig Norman had to be withdrawn through injury.
Shortly after the re-start, in a match which was becoming increasingly niggly, Street were reduced to ten men when referee Kim Fisher gave Dave Brooks his marching orders for a second yellow card.
Undeterred, Street pressed ahead, and if anything looked stronger with ten men. They underlined this just after the hour drawing level through a rasping shot from Liam Jeffrey after a left wing attack.
Scenting victory, and with Town unable to find an outlet, Street continued to press and when they were awarded a free kick close to the edge of the box on the left, they floated in a free kick to the far post which was met by Nicky Davison who made no mistake in heading home with only minutes left to grab the points.
This result really puts the cat amongst the pigeons, with Bridgend Street breathing hard down the neck of Town, six points adrift but with a game in hand.
Street have also to play perennial whipping boys, Newport Civil Service, both home and away, in matches which seem guaranteed to yield six points from the already relegated side.
Town have a blank Saturday before a stern test at Llantwit Major on Wednesday May 11.
Tonight, (Thursday) Town’s reserve side, still buoyant from an emphatic 6-1 demolition of Newport YMCA on Saturday, with Owen Vaughan running riot grabbing five of the haul and Jack McGonnigle the other, are in action at Pen-y-Pound (7pm) in a local derby against Goytre Reserves.
Abergavenny Town U16S concluded their season, defeating league leaders Undy Reds 3-2 with goals from Alex Hoyle, Drew Heffernan and Keiran Dobbs to finish in a very creditable third place.
