Ely Rangers FC - 0
ABERGAVENNY Town’s match against Ely Rangers was the proverbial game of two halves – all action in the first half, but very little in the second.
Having said that, Town were rampant in the first 45 minutes and needed little second half exertion, after having done enough to win the game before the break.
Dean Morgan started the rout after only nine minutes when Richard Jeremiah’s trickery down the right wing saw him set up Morgan who needed no second chance to beat Ranger’s ‘keeper Perks. Next up it was Jeremiah himself who netted, after finding himself free he bore down on Perks and slotted with ease.
More Rangers woe followed shortly afterwards when a Rangers defender sliced the ball into his own net, and Town found themselves 3-0 up after only 28 minutes.
When Jamie Summers soared to head home with seven minutes of the half remaining, Rangers must have known they were beaten and when Morgan grabbed another on the stroke of half time their misery was complete.
Rangers complained at half-time about the state of the Pen-y-Pound pitch, but referee Lewis was having none of it, and play continued.
In truth Ely were a much better outfit in the second half and brought one excellent save from Town’s stopper Tom Indge, but both sides, despite a volley on the swivel from Town’s Owen Vaughan, did not trouble the scorer.
This win, which sees Town record another ‘double’ having already beaten Rangers at their Wenvoe home earlier in the season, means Town climb to second in the table as they continue to battle it out with a possible four other contenders looking for one of the two promotion spots available.
On Saturday, Town carry on their campaign as they travel to face Lliswerry (2:00pm).
Meanwhile it was the turn of Town’s reserve side to face Lliswerry for the second time in a week, and although they couldn’t manage the heights of the 9-1 slaughter they inflicted on them at Pen-y-Pound, they returned home with a 3-2 victory after goals by Tom Jenkins, Nathan Davies and Curtis Methven.
