Dinas Powys FC - 2
Abergavenny Town FC - 1
FOLLOWING their defeat to Dinas Powys, who are proving to be their bogey team, Aber lost top spot in Welsh League Division Two to local rivals Monmouth Town.
On a bobbly and heavy pitch Dinas Powys were first to show their intentions going close with a shot from the edge of the box after 10 minutes.
Shortly after, Nathan Davies tested Dinas’ goalkeeper, Callum Richardson and then Town forced a succession of free kicks, but none found their mark with Dinas’ defence clearing each one.
Towards half time Dinas again looked threatening, firing just wide, and with five minutes of the half remaining were awarded a controversial penalty. Referee Hollyoake judged Aaron Norman to have handled the ball in the penalty area, waving away claims from Town that the ball had struck his chest. Dinas Powys duly converted for a half-time lead.
In the second-half Town started to exert more pressure, and more penalty controversy was to follow when Town’s Rhys Tandy was felled just inside the penalty area. Following a lengthy spell when he consulted with his assistant, Hollyoake eventually decided the foul was committed just outside of the area, and awarded a free kick, to howls of derision from Town’s travelling contingent who saw Richardson make a good save from the free kick.
Tandy was proving to be the thorn in Dinas’ side, and when he was fouled again, Curtis Methven saw his blast of a free kick well saved by Richardson.
Town were exerting lots of pressure, but 15 minutes from time Dinas nipped in again to double their advantage. Town re-doubled their effort, and again Curtis Methven was foiled by Richardson before Sean Feeley latched on to a loose ball in the box and this time Richardson had no chance as Town reduced the deficit, ten minutes from time.
In a frantic finale Town pressed hard but Dinas Powys held on to claim the points. On Saturday, Town will be looking to return to winning ways entertaining West End FC at Pen-y-Pound in a 2.00pm kick off. Town’s reserves who travel to Pontyclun on Saturday, saw their fixture fall victim to the weather last Saturday, as did Town’s Youth team fixture at Treharris. On Sunday kicking off at 2pm, Town’s Youth host Ynyshir Albion at Pen-y-Pound.
Ynyshir Albion are currently on top of the league with a 100 percent record. Town lie in fourth place.
