Caldicot Town - 2

Town’s soar-away season come down to earth with a bump at Pen-y-Pound last Saturday when their 13 match unbeaten run came to an end.

Caldicot arrived at Pen-y-Pound with an impressive run of results having beaten three title contenders in their last three outings and now add Town to that list.

But things could have turned out differently had Town not spurned a gilt edged chance as early as the seventh minute, dithering in front of goal, and eventually allowing Caldicot’s former Newport County ‘keeper, Gareth Wesson to claim the ball.

After this reprieve Caldicot showed their intent forcing Tom Indge to produce a top class save from a blistering shot, but a moment later he was undone when a similar effort found the top corner. If Caldicot’s opener was all about power their second goal just before half time, was all about touch, deftly guiding the ball into the net from a cross from the right, as Town went into the break with a first half to forget.

Town came more into the game in the second half, and were unlucky to see their close range effort from Toby Purvis ruled out for off-side, and when further personnel changes were made, were more off a threat with Rhys Tandy in particular finding plenty of space, but Caldicot held on to prove, like Town, they will be title contenders.

With Town’s nearest rivals, Croesyceiliog having a blank weekend, Town hold on to top spot, but will be looking to make amends when they travel to Dinas Powys on Saturday (2pm).

Town’s reserve side fared little better last Saturday losing away, 3-0 to local rivals Panteg, and face Treharris Athletic Western at Pen-y-Pound on Saturday (2.00pm).
