AHEAD of their all-important FAW Trophy semi-final showdown with Wrexham based FC Queens Park, Abergavenny Town proved they are in fine fettle with a 4-1 win over Cwm Welfare.
Once more Town were quick off the mark when Dan Jenkins managed to score from what seemed an impossibly tight angle after only four minutes, but once more Town made the Pen-y-Pound faithful wait for further goals.
The second score arrived two minutes from the break when Craig Norman carried the ball from half way and picked his spot with ease as he slotted past Betheney in Cwm’s goal.
In the second half Town again got of to a flying start when five minutes in, Dean Morgan’s shot clipped the post and eluded Betheney as Town enjoyed a three goal cushion.
That was short lived though, as the visitors who had trekked from Beddau, near Pontypridd scored for the first time through live-wire substitute Lewis Harries twelve minutes later.
However, normal service was resumed when Owen Vaughan, denied moments earlier by an offside call, side footed his volley past Betheney on 77 minutes, as Town claimed the points, which sees them joint league leaders with Pontypridd Town who have yet to visit Pen-y-Pound.
Town will play their FAW Trophy semi-final this Saturday on Newtown FC’s 3G surface at their Latham Park ground.
Kick off is 5.30pm after Newton’s WPL fixture with Bala Town, and Town can be sure of plenty of support with a fully booked coach leaving Pen-y-Pound at 1pm, and many others making their way there by car. Thereafter Town face a run of four consecutive away fixtures.
Meanwhile Town’s reserve side travelled to Caldicot Town knowing defeat would see their hosts leapfrog them in the table. Town underlined how capable they are of competing at this level by holding Caldicot to a 0-0 draw and cementing their mid-table position.
They are back in action at Pen-y-Pound on Saturday entertaining Bridgend Street (ko 2:30pm) and also on Wednesday March 23 against Risca United (7:30pm).
