Ton Pentre FC - 2
Abergavenny Town FC - 1
TOWN travelled to Ton Pentre and were quickly into their stride, taking the game to their opponents.
Drew Heffernan twice went close to opening the scoring within the first six minutes, however both attempts failed to hit the target.
Ton’s goalkeeper was called on to make another save when Nathan Davies’ rasping shot looked goal-bound.
Ton weathered the early pressure and began to push Town’s defence, and took the lead on 15 minutes when a failure to clear their line saw Ton’s Jamie Bebb fire into the net.
Ton began to exert more authority and had a further chance to increase their lead but shot wide of Town’s far post. Back came Abergavenny and an Aaron Norman free kick saw Curtis Methven turn and fire goal-bound forcing a good save from Ton’s goalkeeper once again. Further chances fell to the Town as the first half drew to a close with Dan Jenkins’ quick strike drawing the best save of the match.
Town came out in the second half in a determined mood and Sean Feeley was put through by a good ball forward and beat the advancing goalkeeper to draw the Town level after 50 minutes.
It was now Town’s turn on top, but they lacked the clinical touch in front of goal once again. Curtis Methven, who was returning from injury, was replaced by youngster Rhys Jones, the substitute making his Welsh League debut.
As the half progressed further chances fell to both teams but failure to be decisive in defence was to prove costly for Town when Ton’s Jonathan Webb rounded Tom Indge to give the home side a deserved lead and win with 10 minutes on the clock.
On Saturday Town turn their attention to league cup action travelling the short distance to Abertillery Bluebirds (ko 2pm).
Meanwhile at Pen-y-Pound Stadium last Saturday, Town’s reserve side fresh from a mid-week 2-1 victory over Clydach Wasps where the crowd was nudging 150, were in rampant form in their local derby against Mardy FC.
However it was Mardy who drew first blood scoring a quick-fire goal in the opening minute. Undeterred Town stormed back with Liam Simmonds equalising after three minutes and Sam Rashdi putting Town ahead two minutes later, in a pulsating start to the match.
Tom Jenkins added a third on the quarter hour, and Simmonds and Rhys Meadows both scored before the break.
To their credit, Mardy did find the net again in the second half, but when Simmonds fired in a second half brace to take his tally to four goals, the result was never in doubt, as Jack Nield’s men go joint top of the table, and travel to Race Utd on Saturday.(ko 3pm).
