Abertillery Bluebirds FC - 2

ABERGAVENNY Town were quick out of the blocks in their League Cup match against the Abertillery Bluebirds and dominated the early exchanges, but despite creating chance after chance, they failed to find the the net.

Town would soon rue these missed chances.

While routinely playing the ball out of defence Town were dispossessed in midfield. The Bluebirds quickly fed their left winger with the stolen ball, who in turn, sent over a long, ranging cross which evaded ‘keeper, Tom Indge and was met at the far post to give the hosts the lead.

In the aftermath, Town gradually lost their momentum but on the stroke of half time gave the Bluebirds a tremendous scare with both Sean Feeley and Rhys Tandy being denied in a frenetic goalmouth scramble.

Early in the second-half Town fell further behind to a shot from just inside the box as the hosts doubled their lead, and five minutes after this the Bluebirds produced a carbon copy of this goal, but this time it was ruled out for offside.

To their credit Town tried hard to get back into the game but it was not to be as the Bluebirds advance to the quarter-final.

Town remain in cup action next Saturday, but this time it’s the FAW Cup and will be taking a supporters coach as they travel to Newport Corinthians for this second qualifying round tie (2.30pm)

Town’s reserve side continued their winning ways and claimed outright first place in the Gwent Central League Division One table, after a 2-4 win at Race AFC.

Playing on a less than perfect surface, Tom Jenkins bagged a hat-trick while George Clarke got Town’s fourth, to clinch a hard fought win. They are without a fixture on Saturday

Meanwhile at Pen-y-pound Stadium last Sunday Abergavenny Town’s U16s were at home for the first time this season and made amends for their opening day slip-up at Newport based, Riverside Rovers with a very convincing 4-0 win over Garden City, in which Town’s keeper didn’t have a save to make throughout the game.

Town’s goals came from Yanek Houston and Corey Paton who both grabbed a brace, while in defence, team captain, Leighton Melia and vice- captain Leon Ricketts were outstanding as a centre-back partnership.

On Sunday they travel to Monmouth Town (2.15pm).

Due to the unevenness of the Women’s Welsh Premier League fixtures, Abergavenny Town Women, who have only managed one fixture so far this season, will not appear at Pen-y-Pound Stadium until October 13 in a League Cup fixture against Llandudno Ladies.
