Treharris Athletic Western FC - 1
ABERGAVENNY Town’s dream of winning the FAW Trophy and securing promotion from Division Three of the Welsh league has hit the buffers in recent weeks.
With the FAW Trophy safely in the trophy cabinet at Pen-y-Pound, second placed Town’s concentration was firmly on the remaining league matches and the tough schedule which saw them play all of their remaining seven matches away from home.
A 3-2 reversal at third placed Bridgend Street saw their hosts close the gap on Town and although Town gained a 1-0 victory at Newport YMCA in their next outing, Bridgend Street also kept up their winning ways.
Town’s next match against Llantwit Major yielded only a point in a 2-2 draw, and Town’s ambitions were further dented when defender Dafydd Brewer was handed a two match suspension after being sent off in this match, in which Town also lost club captain Jamie Summers to a long term injury.
Next up, at STM Sports Town went down 4-2 after leading 2-0 early on, and with Bridgend Street beating Newport Civil Service 6-1 away, they kept up the pressure on Town.
However, Town had a stirring 2-1 victory last Friday night at Treharris with goals from Dean Morgan and Jamie Laurent.
Bridgend Street also won again when this time they entertained Newport Civil Service, with the Newport side doing marginally better, losing 5-1.
This victory sees both Bridgend Street and Town level on 71 points, with both sides having played 32 games and well clear of the trailing pack, but crucially Town has a much superior goal difference, and has the chance to improve on this on Thursday ( tonight 6.30pm) when they travel to the already relegated Civil Service side.
On Saturday Town play their final league match of the season away at Treowen Stars (2.30pm) and are sure to take a large travelling support, knowing that if they overcome their two opponents this week then promotion as league runners-up will be theirs.
Bridgend Street are home to champions Pontypridd Town on Wednesday (6.30pm) and their final league match is at Panteg on Friday night (6.45pm).
