AFC Llwydcoed - 1

Abergavenny Town FC - 2

RESTORED to near full strength, Town finally broke their duck with a hard-fought victory against their hosts in Rhondda Cynon Taff.

Town exerted pressure on Llwydcoed from the off, with the home side kicking the ball against their own goal post in a desperate attempt to clear the ball.

After 20 minutes Town thought they had edged ahead only for Nathan Davies’s effort to be ruled out for off-side.

In the wake of this disaster struck. Town’s talented striker was knocked unconscious, resulting in a 25 minute delay whilst he was taken to hospital. When play resumed The ‘Coed looked more threatening, but Tom Indge in Town’s goal was rarely troubled as Town held the upper hand at the break.

Town’s Curtis Methven sent out a message early in the second-half when his shot which was bound for the top corner was finger-tipped to safety.

Town’s starlet was not to be denied. Half-way through the second-half, he found himself free on the right wing and with little support around him took the chance to fire a blistering shot past Quinton in ‘Coed’s goal to open Town’s account.

Llwydcoed were visibly rattled. Quinton spilled the ball almost into his net from a Town attack, but retrieved the situation with a last gasp save.

With captain Aaron Norman leading by example, Town were awarded a corner with 15 minutes remaining. From the spot kick Ross Davies powered home a textbook header to give the Town a two goal cushion, and how they needed it.

The game was an old fashioned physical battle and saw Jac Evans depart with a broken nose. ‘Coed came back strongly and scored from the penalty spot to set up a tense finale, but Town held on for a morale boosting victory.

Town are next in action, entertaining Risca United at Pen-y-Pound Stadium, tomorrow night (Friday). Kick-off is 7.45pm.

The two top teams in the reserve division, Town and Undy battled out a 0-0 draw at Pen-y-Pound, while Town’s youth side’s splendid 100 percent run came to an end with a 6-2 defeat at Treforest. Lance Lewis, scored a brace of consolation goals.
