HERE’S a right rum bunch for you. Take a close look. There’s something of a look of undisguised glee and unadorned triumph on their boat-races. And well there might be. It’s the Abergavenny Thursdays team from 1935 who at the time of this snap being snapped were fresh off the field following a 1-0 victory over Tupsley. The match on April 25 of that year was a big one because it saw the Pen-y-Pound mob bring home the Hereford and District Cup.

Also in this old photo are members of the Thursdays supporters club keen to join in their boys’ triumph.

The picture was taken four years before the world would be plunged into the abyss of World War Two, in a year when Stanley Baldwin became prime minister for the third time and Penguin paperbacks were launched with the worthy ambition to bring literature to the masses.

Judging by the looks of the gentleman seated and standing in this pic, 1935 was the midway point in a decade of Brylcreem and fedora hats, broad shoulders, thin waists and tapered wide legs. Nevertheless, it was also a year of sporting success.

So why not take another turn in the spotlight Mr Wallis, Tommy Fitzgerald, Cyril Morgan, “Binks” Adams, Bob Simmons, Trevor Morris, Billy Bull, Fred Higgs, Vic Sullivan, Joe Morgan and anyone else we’ve failed to mention in the photo who’s got the sort of name they just don’t make anymore.

That’s it for this week folks. A lot of water has passed under the bridge between then and now but if not for posterity what else is a picture ever taken for?
