Treowen Stars FC - 0

Abergavenny Town cruised to victory in their final match of the season at Treowen last Saturday by hitting four goals without reply.

On the scoresheet for Town were Owen Vaughan, Craig Norman with a brace and Dan Jenkins. This win was made all the more easier as Town travelled to Treowen safe in the knowledge they were a promoted side, having pulled away from rivals Bridgend Street the previous Thursday when Town travelled to the already doomed Newport Civil Service.

Although the Newport side took a shock early lead, Town returned home with a comfortable 5-2 victory, courtesy of goals from Dean Morgan, Jamie Laurent and a Craig Norman hat trick which saw them with a two point advantage over Bridgend Street. The outcome was that to overtake Town, Bridgend Street had to beat local side Panteg last Friday night in their final match of the season, and then hope that Town slipped up against Treowen.

This equation never materialised as Bridgend Street lost 1-0 at Panteg leaving Town to claim runners-up spot even before a ball was kicked at Treowen.

So it’s been a memorable season for Town, lifting the FAW Trophy back in April, and now securing promotion at their first attempt.

Club secretary Rob Francis said, “It’s been a long hard season during which we have played 51 matches, when you take into account our pre-season and cup matches, but in achieving double success this has made it all worthwhile.

“We now have a short six week break before we start training again, and of course we will face even greater challenges next season, both on the pitch and off. We will play a lot of our football in west Wales at Llanelli, Ammanford and Gorseinon and our costs are certain to increase, so fundraising will be number one on our agenda.

“If anyone feels they want to be part of a winning team and come on board to help the dedicated but hard pressed volunteers we already have, then I would be delighted to hear from them on 07999538478.”

Town have already announced the first of their pre-season friendlies when Southern League Premier outfit, Merthyr Town visit Pen-y-Pound on Tuesday July 12.
