WHAT were you doing in 1947? In Roswell there was a serious incident involving what may have been intergalactic tourists, in the UK we nationalized our coal mines, elsewhere, a 22-year-old Margaret Thatcher took a job as research chemist in Colchester, and in Bailey Park they enjoyed a good old-fashioned kick around as the world kept spinning and the tides kept turning.

Featured this week are two pics for posterity sent in by Richard Linnell. On the left we have The Mermaids who were the six-a-side winners of the ‘Bachelor’ Challenge Cup.

From left to right in the back row are Pamela Walter, H.G. Owen (President), Barbara Jackson, (Captain), Councillor B.R. Griffiths (Abergavenny Mayor), and Molly Walker. Sitting pretty in the front row we have Peggy Winney, Anne Waring, and Maureen Davis.

The picture on the right features members of the rugby club who were were six-a-side winners of the Leo Fine Challenge Cup. Standing are R. King, J. Lloyd and K. Bailey. Sitting we have G. Evans, Mrs B.R. Griffiths (Mayoress), H.G. Owen (President), T. Matthews, and T.Meadows (Captain).

Mr Linnell told the Chronicle, “The Mayor and Mayoress in the photos are my great aunt and uncle.

Auntie Grace was born in Llantilio Pertholey Mill and Uncle Bertie was a serving army officer during World War Two.

“At the time of this photo they were living in Park Crescent. Grace had a ladies’ clothes shop in the town and Bertie taught at Hereford Road Boys School.

They were a lovely couple whom I spent a lot of time with as a child, unfortunately they didn’t have any children of their own.”

Mr Linnell added, “They are no longer with us, but I have some great memories. I hope the photos bring back memories for others who may have relatives they recognise.”
