Pontypridd Town - 1

Abergavenny Town - 1

FOLLOWING their fine mid-week success over AFC Llwydcoed, Abergavenny Town travelled to third placed Pontypridd Town last Saturday with renewed vigour and returned home with a hard earned but well deserved draw to further ease any relegation worries.

For once the Ynysangharad Park pitch was dry although bumpy and the game was played with a strong swirling wind throughout.

Town were the first to settle and took the game to their opponents from the start. Several chances to open the score were missed early on, the best of which was a hard drive across the face of the Pontypridd goal on 25 minutes by striker Sean Feeley, which narrowly flew just wide of the far post, with the home ‘keeper well beaten.

Ryan Griffiths in Ponty’s goal was far from sure with several fumbles and missed catches, unfortunately none of which were seized upon by the Abergavenny front men.

Pontypridd gradually became more of a threat as the first half progressed, with a number of chances missed and the game entered half-time 0-0.

The second-half began much the same as the first with both teams looking to force the break through, but it was not until the 70th minute that Pontypridd managed to open the scoring, when a low, hard strike was only parried by Aber’s Tom Indge and the rebound was forced home 1-0 to the home side.

Abergavenny continued to press forward looking for the equaliser and began to make changes to the front players, bringing on Dane Griffiths and Alex Bonthron in place of Sam Oakley and Sean Feeley.

Pontypridd missed a number of chances to increase their lead, most of which were hit high over the crossbar, and began to look at ways of seeing out the game.

The often blatant attempts at time wasting did not impress Town’s strong travelling support nor the Referee, and it proved to be counter productive when Alex Bonthron stole around the back of the defence and headed powerfully into the net to grab a hard fought draw for Abergavenny as the game entered added time.

This Saturday Town return to Pen-y-Pound when they entertain Cwmamman Utd. kick-off 2.30pm. The following Tuesday (April 4) they are again on the road when they visit AFC Porth. kick-off 6.30pm.
