Aber Town - 3

Briton Ferry Llansawel - 4

ABERGAVENNY Town almost sprang the shock result of a round two win against their Division One opponents, but in the end had to settle for an honourable defeat.

However it was Town who struck first after 19 minutes when a Dan Jenkins header gave them the lead. Briton Ferry hit back almost immediately when Gareth Jones, who went on to claim a hat trick, got the first of his treble, and he doubled his tally just after the half hour mark, which left Town with a one goal deficit at half time.

Early in the second half, Jones’ strike partner, Stephen Davey, extended the visitors lead, and on 68 minutes when Jones struck again they seemed to be cruising.

Enter Jamie Laurent, who was brought on as a second half substitute, and soon started showing his skills. He was first to a rebound to thump the ball into the back of the net on 70 minutes, and netted again six minutes later from a stunning free kick to give Town hope and ignite the crowd, but Town just could not find that all important equaliser to take the game to extra time.

On Saturday Town travel to Beddau, near Pontypridd to play Cwm Welfare, and the following Saturday are on their travels again to play Team Swansea in the fourth round of the FAW Trophy. Both games kick off at 2.00pm.

Also on Saturday, Town’s reserve side face the daunting prospect of a trip to the runaway league leaders, Cardiff Met University.

On Sunday, Town’s U 18 side are in action at Pen-y-Pound, entertaining Treowen Stars (2.15pm).
