Garden Village FC - 0

Abergavenny Town FC - 1

Risca FC - 1

ABERGAVENNY Town followed up their impressive 6-0 away win at Aberdare Town when Sean Feeley notched a hat trick, with another victory, this time against Garden Village to ensure their sensational season stays on track.

Daniel Hartland, recently signed from the now-defunct Brynmawr AFC, opened the scoring on his home debut. Looking bright from the start, he was fouled close to the corner flag on the left wing, and when Curtis Methven floated over the free kick Hartland stooped to guide the ball home to give Town a twelfth minute lead.

Hartland almost doubled his tally moments later but Ireland in the visitor’s goal brought off a great fingertip save

Garden Village, who had downed high flying Caerau Ely in their last outing, proved they were no mugs and enjoyed long spells of possession. However, Town boast the meanest defence in the division, and held firm to retain the advantage at half time.

The second half produced more of the same, with the visitors still seeing plenty of the ball, but showing little thrust against a well marshalled defence.

Town kept the best for last. With the game drifting towards the final whistle Curtis Methven, popped up on the right and fired a diagonal shot which deceived Ireland and clipped his far post, low down, before entering the net.

Then, to cap it all Richie Jeremiah found himself in acres of room in the opposition half, beating the advancing Ireland to the ball before firing home to seal Town’s win.

With table toppers Croesyceiliog only managing a draw, this win sees Town leap-frog their neighbours to claim pole position, being equal on points but boasting a superior goal difference, and as one observer commented it’s the highest position any Abergavenny side has achieved, in the Welsh League since 1992.

So, on to last Friday and Risca. Town took a first half advantage through Sean Feeley but were pegged back in the second half and in the end had to settle for a 1-1 draw. But these are exciting times for the Town and all eyes moved to Croesyceiliog’s Saturday encounter at STM Sports.

When the news filtered through that victory had gone to the home side, Town knew their reign at the top would continue for a little longer.

Town now look forward to Saturday’s encounter at Pen-y-Pound against Caldicot Town, whom Town beat 1-2 last October.

Meanwhile Town’s reserve side bounced back from an embarrassing 5-0 reversal at Treharris Athletic with a 2-1 victory over Caldicot Town.
