Abergavenny Town - 2

Pontadawe Town - 2

THE pitch at Pen-y-Pound Stadium, parts of which were under water the previous evening, drained sufficiently well to allow the game against Pontardawe Town to go ahead even if it was on a tacky surface.

The visitors, who had been out of action for five weeks, were slow to start. Town almost grabbed the lead ten minutes in when Jac Evans floated over a free kick which Nathan Davies met perfectly on the volley. Yet the ever-dependable Reeve in Pontadawe’s goal produced a magnificent one handed save to his right.

Curtis Methven was next to test Reeve with a blistering drive, but the keeper saved well as he did from Ross Melrose’s attempted chip.

Despite the early Town pressure, Pontardawe started to get in their stride with their pacey forward line starting to cause Town problems, and it was their right winger, Corey Saunders, who opened the scoring on 38 minutes.

Town had an immediate chance to level when referee Mark Gardiner awarded them a penalty, and despite Reeve saving Bradd Jones’ spot kick, he could not prevent Town’s mid-fielder netting the rebound as the sides went into the break on level terms.

Three minutes after the re-start it was Pontardawe’s turn to be awarded a penalty when Town were penalised for handball. Their captain, Gary Taylor made no mistake from the spot as Pontardawe regained the lead.

On the hour mark, Pontardawe’s Josh Roberts had the chance to give his side a cushion but fired wide.

Thereafter Town pressed hard for an equaliser, and in the closing minutes thought they had succeeded as the ball seemed certain to cross the goal-line at the Wellfield Close End but again it was Reeve who brought off a terrific save, scooping the ball to safety.

Town continued to press and as the clock moved into added time, they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, which saw Curtis Methven, unlucky with a thunderous drive earlier in the game, blast the ball past Reeve as Town claimed a share of the spoils.

Town are without a fixture on Saturday, but travel to play Ammanford on Sunday (2.30pm).

Town’s reserve side who were due to play Panteg last Saturday but saw their fixture lost to the weather, travel to local rivals Goytre on Saturday (2.30pm).
