Abergavenny Men were involved in two games last week. They played their first game in this year’s Welsh (Carruthers) Cup at Belle Vue Park. They were victorious on three of the four rinks to win the game by 99 shots to 73. In their EMBA game earlier in the week, they beat local rivals Bailey Park by 80 shots to 39 at Avenue Road.

In the game against Belle Vue the rink of Gethin Hill dropped four shots on the first end. They then prevented their opponents scoring another shot until the tenth end, by which time the Abergavenny rink led by 17 shots. They continued to build on their lead to win the game by 32 shots to 10. Anthony Moriarty’s rink could not find the pace of the green initially, resulting in a three shot deficit after five ends. From this point they grabbed the initiative and then scored five shots on the nineteenth end which helped to seal their victory by 25 shots to 18.

In a high scoring game Matthew Vale’s rink held a nine shot lead after six ends. This lead was gradually reduced to one by the twelfth end. The Abergavenny rink then scored seven shots on the thirteenth end to help them secure their victory by 26 shots to 23. Unfortunately, the rink of Keith Richards was the only one to suffer defeat. Although scores were level with six ends to play, the Belle Vue rink scored ten shots, conceding only four, over these final ends to win the game by 22 shots to 16.

In the EMBA game against Bailey Park, the matches were close on two of the rinks with the rink of Keith Richards winning by one shot and John Marsh’s rink by five shots. However, on the two remaining rinks of Gethin Hill and John Vale the margin of victory was 16 shots and 24 shots respectively which enabled Abergavenny to record a victory by 80 shots to 34.

Abergavenny Ladies played their first league game of the season at Caerleon. Unfortunately, for various reasons Abergavenny could not field a full team which led them to a defeat on all three rinks, to lose the game by 67 shots to 26. Rink scores were Ceri Clark 11 – 20, Mary Evans 8 – 24 and Lesley Radley 7 – 23.

This week Abergavenny play Blaenavon at Avenue Road in the second Welsh Cup game and Abergavenny Ladies entertain Penyrheol in a league game.
