Abergavenny Town FC - 1

Croesyceiliog FC - 0

THE bumper crowd who turned up at Pen-y-Pound Stadium last Saturday to witness Town’s final home match of the season went home happy as Town recorded another win over neighbours Croesyceiliog.

In truth clear cut chances were at a premium between two equally matched sides. Town’s best moment of the first-half came 25 minutes in when Joe Palmer played a long ball down the right wing, chased down by Richie Jeremiah whose speed easily out-paced the Croesy defence. It was only a magnificent save by Croesy’s ‘keeper which denied Jeremiah and his power blast.

The best moment of the game came halfway through the second half, and it was a touch of sheer brilliance which gave Town the lead. Nathan Davies met the ball on the turn and as he spun he volleyed the ball into the top corner of the net, and earned himself an ovation from the gathered faithful.

Thereafter the fare was more of the same with both sides having their share of the game, but when referee Waters blew the final whistle it was Town who bagged the points and rise to third in the table.

Town’s man of the match, as selected by the joint match sponsors the Crown and Sceptre Inn and Paul Rutter Removals, was Tom Indge - reflecting the fact that Town’s veteran ‘keeper is having a stellar season. The match-ball sponsor was Brian Butt.

Town now sit on the side-lines for the next two weeks, mainly because their Pen-y-Pound pitch remained playable for most of the winter, whilst their opponents suffered many postponements which will now need to be played in quick succession to catch up.

So, Town are next in action at Pontardawe FC on Saturday April 27 (2.30pm).

This means the focus switches to Town’s reserve side, who stopped the rot after a run of consecutive defeats, with a 1-1 draw at Croesyceiliog on the weekend. Town’s goal came from Owen Vaughan.

The reserves play at Pen-y-Pound Stadium for the next three consecutive Saturday’s and will be looking to avenge an earlier 7-1 drubbing at the hands of Dinas Powys when they face them again this .Saturday.

Pen-y-Pound Stadium will be a busy place during May with the ground chosen to host the Gwent FA Amateur Cup final between Crickhowell and Abertillery Excelsiors on Saturday May 4. On Friday May 10 it will again host another Gwent final, this time the Gwent County Motors cup which currently is at the quarter final stage.

After this comes a host of Gwent Central Football League cup finals on May 11/12, and again on May 18/19. After this the stadium will be closed for routine repairs, pitch maintenance and the installation of more seating.
