LAST Saturday saw the visit of Rogerstone to the Elvicta for what ultimately turned out to be a very fruitful day for Crickhowell FC.

Conditions were perfect for football on a well maintained surface and the hosts made an assured start dominating the early exchanges.

Crickhowell’s early pressure led to an opening created by midfielder Alex Aitken and a well drilled shot from veteran Nick Francis on the edge of the 18 yard box powered the ball neatly into the bottom corner, 1-0 Crickhowell.

For the remainder of the half Rogerstone fought back and pressurised the Crickhowell goal, winning multiple free kicks and corners.

However, the Crick defence stood firm and keeper Dan Murphy pulled off a stunning one handed save to maintain the hosts’ clean sheet just before half time.

The second half followed a similar start to the first with Luke Ewers working tirelessly to create chances for the Crick forwards.

The introduction of Lewis Tucker on the wing led to increased pressure on the Rogerstone goal and really opened the game up.

Ewers was able to shoot from range and secure Crickhowell’s second of the match. Ian Davies wrapped things up late on with a strike to see the hosts home and dry and run out 3-0 victors. Solid defensive performances from new centre back partnership James ’Squirrel’ Thomas and Andy ’Brummy’ Slater, marshalled well by Dan Murphy ensured that a clean sheet was well earned. Club stalwart Mike Ling was a constant thorn in the visitors’ side and did everything but score.

First team manager Matthew Stephens said he was pleased with his side’s performance and recent form and hopes this means that the club can travel to Coed Eva (away) next weekend and secure another three points.

Crickhowell now sit seventh in Gwent County Division Three and hope their best is yet to come. Crickhowell’s reserves face Cwmffrodoer at the Elvicta Football Ground next weekend in a 2pm kick-off and extend a warm welcome to all.
