Newport Corinthians FC - 0

bergavenny Town FC - 2

ABERGAVENNY Town weathered some early pressure from Newport Corries, but on seven minutes they scored in clinical fashion from a fast-flowing move in which Dan Jenkins’ astute pass to Rhys Tandy saw Town’s marksman smash the ball into the net with the goalkeeper stranded.

Two minutes later Town were on the rampage again, pummelling the Corries’ goal, and following rebound after rebound, Dan Jenkins blasted home.

Town’s travelling supporters might have expected a rout at this stage, but the Corries soon showed the spirit which won them promotion to Gwent’s top flight last season.

It took Town’s reserve goalkeeper, James Baker, to make a smart save with his legs from short range on 25 minutes, to keep his goal intact and as half-time beckoned he needed to be sharp to prevent a downward header creeping in at the far post.

Sensing they were still in the game, Corries came out with all guns blazing in the second half, but Town’s defence stood firm and they nearly increased their lead five minutes in, with a fierce free kick, and at the mid-way stage, when Joe Palmer released Richard Jeremiah, he set up Will Duggan who went very close.

In the closing stages Baker was again called into action making a string of saves but Town held on to make sure their name is in the hat for the draw for the first round.

On Saturday, Town return to league action travelling to Pontardawe Town(2.30pm) whilst Town’s reserve side who were without a fixture last Saturday face Pontypool Town at Pen-y-Pound Stadium ( 3pm)

Meanwhile Town’s U16 side could not repeat the heroics of their last league outing, going down 4-1 at Monmouth Town, but they are also at home at Pen-y-Pound Stadium on the weekend but this time on Sunday, entertaining Rogerstone Rangers (2.15pm).
