Abergavenny Women - 0

Cardiff Met - 1

Abergavenny Women’s dreams of lifting a trophy for the first time were dashed in extra time, as current cup holders Cardiff Met scored a single goal to separate the winners from the losers.

To compound their misery, this was the second time in the space of a month the Aber ladies have lost in such a fashion to the city slickers.

On a sticky Pen-y-Pound pitch both teams slugged it out from the kick-off. As the game progressed it was clear to see that the first goal was going to be crucial.

Superb saves from both keepers, as well as some last ditch tackles on a pitch not suitable for fast and flowing football, kept the game goalless.

After 90 minutes, the two teams locked horns in a tense and strained period of extra time, where a little bit of luck or a rash mistake can make or break a game.

And so it proved. A back pass to Charlotte Hastings held up on the pitch and her clearance smashed against Cardiff Met’s attacker who poked the ball home.

It was heartbreak for Abergavenny who had given so much to the battle, but they’ll dust themselves down and go again next Sunday at home to Rhyl.
