ABERGAVENNY Cricket Club’s First XI got their South East Wales Cricket League Division One campaign off to a flying start after defeating Croesyceiliog by seven wickets at Avenue Road.

Adam Harrison took the first wicket of the day which was well caught by Sam Clarke, and then left arm spinner Ben Davies with 4-25, leaving Croesy in a spot of bother on 89-5.

Geraint Leach kept the pressure on the batsmen with the sixth wicket, but Huw Griffiths returned the best figures of the day with 4-22, with Croesyceiliog all out for 115.

Luke Bowen and William Glenn started the run chase off well, putting on 53 for the first wicket in quick time. Harrison joined Bowen (42) at the crease with Aber cruising to the win. Gareth Burkitt (12) spent time in the middle but Harrison (25no) and Lewis Holley(11no) saw Aber home with more than 14 overs remaining.

Next up the first team are again at home against Brecon Firsts. The second team start their campaign away against Lisvane third team, while Abergavenny’s third team host Pontymister and Cross Keys second team at Crickhowell cricket ground.

Whilst the First XI were winning their opening League fixture-Abergavenny sent a Friendly XI to Ledbury CC- they had a good game but lost by 32 runs, the highlights being four wickets for Dylan Beaumont Welsh, a half century (58) for Tom Pipe and a (37) from young Tom Norton on his senior debut.

Elsewhere Ben Morris made his Wales Under-15 Debut at Millfield.
