Abergavenny Town FC - 7

Newport Civil Service - 2

Pacesetters Abergavenny Town, met perennial league strugglers at Pen-y-Pound last Saturday, and the expected rout started after only 90 seconds when Richard Jeremiah put Town ahead. What followed thereafter was a litany of missed chances, but all seemed well when Jamie Laurent doubled Town’s advantage with a shot from the edge of the box after 20 minutes.

When Newport themselves got onto the score-sheet with a well taken goal from Ryan Smith ten minutes from the break, some wondered if Town would rue their missed chances.

However the second half turned into a procession, only broken by the occasional attack by Newport. And it was no surprise when Town went further ahead after Laurent’s astute through-ball set up Jeremiah for his second as he coolly beat Chris Jones in Newport’s goal, nine minutes in.

Ten minutes later when Dan Jenkins’ way to goal was blocked, he unselfishly set up Craig Norman who found the corner of the net. In the very next minute Laurent himself was the scorer albeit with the helping hand of a blunder by the over-worked Jones, who by this stage had done well to keep the score down to five.

Even when Newport’s Mohammed Adan struck a sweet strike into the top left hand corner of Tom Indge’s net, the result was never in doubt and to prove this point Town struck again, in a two minute blast when, first Dan Jenkins scored after his initial effort was parried and then Jac Evans stole in to head Town’s seventh.

And it could have been more but for a terrific headed goal-line clearance from a Craig Norman header which seemed destined to hit the back of the net.

Now all eyes turn to next Saturday and Town’s FAW Trophy quarter final tie at Pen-y-Pound against Llanrhaeadr FC from the Spar Mid-Wales League, where like Town, they are amongst the pacesetters, and will prove a stern test.

At this stage last year Town had to travel to face Llandudno Junction FC.

A club spokesman explained, “We are glad we do not face the effort and expense of travelling to places like Llandudno which meant an overnight stay last year.

“Whatever the outcome on Saturday this will be the town’s last chance to come out and support the boys and we are expecting our largest crowd since we have been playing under the banner of Abergavenny Town FC.

“The match kicks off at 1:30pm, and you are advised to come early to be sure of a parking spot.”
