Lliswerry FC - 1

Abergavenny Town - 2

Only two games in the entire Welsh League survived the atrocious weather last Saturday and thanks to Lliswerry’s 3G surface Abergavenny Town’s was one of them.

Which was very fortunate for Town because their victory sees them move to the top the table.

Town adapted well to the driving rain and gale force winds, and thought they had taken the lead on 20 minutes but Aaron Norman’s goal was disallowed by referee Wallen, who went on to make some controversial decisions later in the game.

However, Town did take the lead five minutes later when Dan Jenkins was on hand at the far post to head in.

Lliswerry were on the back foot and Town continued to make the most chances but fell foul of the referee’s off-side decisions, and the most the hosts offered was a weak strike which clipped the post.

Early into the second half Town struck again when Dan Jenkins fed Dean Morgan and although his shot was parried, Richard Jeremiah tapped the ball over the goal-line.

By now the torrential rain had eased but the strong wind made control difficult and Lliswerry were handed a life-line on 80 minutes when Ashley Johnson scored.

As conditions worsened Town dug in to keep the home side at bay, and held on to claim the points which sees them at the top of the league by three points although their nearest rivals, Pontypridd Town have three games in hand.

On Saturday Town return to Penypound entertaining league strugglers, Newport Civil Service (2.00pm) ahead of their home FAW Trophy quarter-final tie against Llanrhaeadr (1.30pm) the following Saturday.
