Abergavenny Women - 2

Cardiff City Women - -0

ABERGAVENNY Women Football Club have reached their first ever Welsh Cup Final following a storming victory over former cup winners Cardiff City Women.

The win sets Aber up nicely for a mouthwatering tie with league champions Cardiff Met on April 14.

With some superb support behind them from the travelling ‘Blue Army,’ Abergavenny were forced to soak up some early pressure from the Bluebirds.

A fine save from Charlotte Hastings denied city striker Lisa Bird ten minutes in, and shortly after Aber came close themselves as Lyndsey Davies was sent through one on one.

The first goal was always going to be huge and when it came after 20 minutes it was Kate Jeremiah who broke the deadlock.

After some good interplay from Laura and Lyndsey Davies, Jeremiah beat the last defender and slotted home past the keeper to settle the nerves.

Kate Jeremiah’s mercurial right boot was again in action as she hit a 35 yard free kick into the top corner, as both the team and supporters realised a Welsh Cup place was now within touching distance.

Abergavenny knew that Cardiff would give everything and more in the second-half, but as it turns out they never poised too much of a threat thanks to a superb defensive display from Abi Powell, Mali Summers, Katie Adams and Lauren Boyd.

In fact had they taken their chances Aber could’ve put five or six past them, with Jeremiah just missing out on a hat trick when her last minute strike skimmed the post.

Captain Ceri Hudson was immense in the midfield and will now lead out her side in a Welsh Cup Final.

Manager Richie Jeremiah was a happy man at the end of play and said, “We were amazing today and every single player played a part in an historic victory. We know we’ll be underdogs in the final but that’s just the way we like it.”
