FAW Women’s Cup

Abergavenny Women 23 Ammanford Ladies 0

The Pennies ran up a record rugby score as they exploited a huge gulf in ability to wallop a game but outclassed Ammanford outfit.

To their credit, the West Walians kept going to the end, but the difference in talent was such that Abergavenny were able to give several of their upcoming youngsters valuable game time.

Lyndsey Davies led the way in the goal avalanche with a five-strike haul, while Maxine Mudge and debutant youngster Chloe Leonard scored four apiece.

Kate Jeremiah also netted a hat-trick as did Meg Jones who won the man-of-the-match award, and there were also goals for Jess Bennett, Lauren Boyd, Sian Bull and Ffion Simmonds.

Despite the comprehensive win the highlight was the introduction of three of the club’s U19s players from the bench.

Ffion Simmonds making her second appearance scored her first goal, while Neve Speicher came on to make her senior debut and Chloe Leonard was in dreamland on her debut with four goals.

The club prides itself on its values of creating opportunities for younger players and were delighted to be able to give valuable game time for the trio.

This weekend (Sunday, October 10) the Pennies welcome Cascade to Penypound in the second round of group matches in the Genaro Adran League Cup where a win will secure a place in the next round with a game to spare.

Controversially kicked out of Tier 1 at the end of last season by an FAW restructure alongside Cascade and Britton Ferry, Aber beat the former 2-0 away in Adran League South action two weeks ago and will be hoping for a repeat victory at home following a 6-1 win at Swansea University in their opening group match.

Pennies manager Craig Morgan-Hill said: “The cup games are a nice distraction from the league and it’s always good to get a good cup run going.

“The girls did a professional job on the weekend and kept their high standards and we look forward to a tough encounter on Sunday.

“I’m delighted that our U19s players got to play today, Ffion making her second substitute appearance and Neve and Chloe both making senior debuts.

“Well done girls, as promised our U19s will get opportunities and those three took them

today.”
