Abergavenny Women - 2
Aberystwyth Town Ladies - 0
WOMENS’ premier league football arrived in Abergavenny on Sunday for the first time as Abergavenny Women hosted Aberystwyth Town Ladies, looking to build on their superb win away at Swansea City the previous weekend.
It was quite clear from the start that the visitors weren’t going to make things easy. Content to sit behind the ball and soak up the pressure they showed very little ambition to go forward and took as much time as officials allowed over restarts.
An early injury blow for Abergavenny saw Welsh international Amy Thrupp leave the field after just 10 minutes replaced by Leilah King, which meant a rejig in formation.
Against a defensively orientated side patience is the name of the game and on 20 minutes left winger Alana Murphy found the key to unlock the stubborn defense.
After a superb passing move starting on the right with Kate Jeremiah, who linked up well with Lyndsey Davies and Ceri Hudson, the ball fell to Murphy who finished neatly to make it 1-0 going into half-time.
Abergavenny came out strongly in the second half and top scorer Lyndsey Davies scored a fantastic goal on 55 minutes. Davies turned the defense inside out before firing in a shot which went in off the far post to increase her tally to five in two games. It could’ve been even more had she not missed a penalty after 70 minutes.
With the game safe, Abergavenny took complete control and three precious points to maintain their place at the top of the league at this early stage of the season.
